The media that reported that the aurora would vanish from here within 50 years (oh noes!) have now been pointed towards more reputable sources, which amongst other things, explained that the pole on the surface is not the exact pole itself, and that the diameter of the aurora oval around the pole changes size and shape according to other factors as well.

Thus, the media have retracted their original story. (Apparently, the tourist industry up here is now allowed to breathe a sigh of relief.)

I, for one, feel vindicated in my original belief that there was something fishy and oversimplistic about the story as first presented :)

There is an elderly couple that I'd always see around the mall, her in a wheelchair and him pushing her - she'd had a stroke about a decade ago, and hadn't been able to speak much or use most of her limbs since. He had refused to put her in a home, and spent all his time and energy caring for her. Whenever you saw the two of them together, you could just see the love they had for each other, and the look on her face, always showing a gentle smile in her eyes, would make anyone happy.

Last winter, I saw him alone on a number of occasions, and was worried, then I saw them together again, just as before, and with her wearing his little old man hat on her head. But as of late, I hadn't seen either of them, and I saw him by himself a couple weeks ago.

Today, he came to my store for an eye exam, during which he mentioned having been crying a bit as of late.

She passed away in March.

This tuesday would have been her 89th birthday.

Rest in peace, HH.
