Little old ladies and the people who love them

There is an elderly couple that I'd always see around the mall, her in a wheelchair and him pushing her - she'd had a stroke about a decade ago, and hadn't been able to speak much or use most of her limbs since. He had refused to put her in a home, and spent all his time and energy caring for her. Whenever you saw the two of them together, you could just see the love they had for each other, and the look on her face, always showing a gentle smile in her eyes, would make anyone happy.

Last winter, I saw him alone on a number of occasions, and was worried, then I saw them together again, just as before, and with her wearing his little old man hat on her head. But as of late, I hadn't seen either of them, and I saw him by himself a couple weeks ago.

Today, he came to my store for an eye exam, during which he mentioned having been crying a bit as of late.

She passed away in March.

This tuesday would have been her 89th birthday.

An elderly neighbor up the street who used to say he liked my hat recently passed away, and it's a bummer because his wife is on her own now and I hope she stays, because we *like* our neighbors.
