My sweetie's grandparents took us to see Grand Coulee Dam yesterday.
This trip was better than the other one, which was with friends of my sweetie. I was prepared for the uptight security in the visitor center and didn't even try bringing my wallet, and also the security guys who had made a fuss about my carrying a wallet last time weren't working today.
It was hot, much hotter than last time. An old lady we saw in the evening at a windmill garden, weeding and watering the flowers, said she was working this late because it had been 106 F for several hours earlier.
We went on the dam tour with his grandfather. An old man with a pacemaker wanted to go but didn't know if his doctor would approve, and he and his wife ended up turning back. A good thing, as I don't like being that close to generators that large even without a pacemaker. The elevator had a large plywood panel in one of the windows, and the front row was cordoned off with duct tape. The guide told us that a kid had leaned on his elbow against the window last week, and it had shattered. Yikes!
The guide was funnier than the one we had last time, and more informative too. He genuinely seemed to enjoy showing people the place and joking about it, while the previous one had seened a bit bored.
After the tour, we went to a Mexican restaurant. We'd talked about the oversized portions most places have before we went there. When we got there, sweetie and I ordered small combos. When we got our food, it was in no way small (but very good!) and we wondered what the large combos would look like :)
We proceeded to visit the aforementioned Windmill Garden for a while, before waiting for the laser show on the dam. The laser show itself didn't really wow me, but seeing the water start flowing over the top of the dam in cascades of white foam before the display... now that was something.
As we drove home, far from the light pollution of the surrounding towns and cities, I was treated to the best view of the Milky Way I have ever seen. The name makes real sense to me now.
