This is the third time I have been in the US on july 4th, and the first time I have seen the fireworks (I was too tired to stay in town that late last year, and wasn't offered the option in '97). Biased as I am, being accustomed to Norwegian new year's fireworks where you basically get a horizon full of private fireworks, it still was pretty damned neat, especially towards the climax. Lots of nice blue ones, some that curled in ways I haven't seen before, and no annoying praxis ring fireworks. I did have to fight an urge to say happy new year to my sweetie, and failed somewhat at that :)
Before the fireworks, we saw Spiderman 2. Neat movie.
Before the movie, we went to a block party where my sweetie's mother lives. THAT was nothing like anything I have ever experienced. One house was hosting, provided a tent for food, barbecued meat, drinks, home made ice cream and cake, and guests brought side dishes. We all had to wear name tags and write in a guestbook to show who we were. One of the barbecuers asked where I was from when I said something, and when I said Norway, he was mock sad because it is apparently a big deal to be the one who traveled the farthest to get there, and he'd thought he'd win by coming from Boston :) The host of the party actually specifically insisted on talking with me a bit before we left, as he always has to talk with the farthest traveler.
There were shetland ponies to entertain the children for a while, there was a small raffle, and there was a band that played overly loud music.
