So, today was very slushy, which made me discover that the soles of my boots are coming loose. I went to the shoe store (across the hall from my store) and asked what I could do since they were only a year old, and was told they'd send it to a repairer and if I found the receipt they'd do it for free. Looked at some shoes (I've been wanting another pair of winter shoes), went to work, came back later and looked some more and the owner was there. She helped me find some ankle-height boots of the same design as my current ones and in my size, and said I just needed to drop off the boots and she'd have them fixed for free even without the receipt, as she remembers when I bought them :) (I wear size 42, and when I bought the boots, there was only one pair in the country. My store had it shipped from another store over 500 miles south of here. It's the first time I've found an advantage to having a particularly quirky order :) )

So now I have boots short enough to wear with pants, and my high boots will be glued and made watertight again for free :)
