New Zealand wasn't the only place where they felt the earth move yesterday. In Lyngen, a small village a couple hours inland from here, there was a landslide that carried away two houses, some farmland, a bit of road, and the cables supplying 2000 people (i.e. much of surrounding region) with phone and internet.
One of the houses was completely shattered, and the other ended up floating in the fjord. The people living in the shattered house were not at home, as they were here in town yesterday. The elderly man that lived in the floating house was at home, sleeping upstairs. They were able to use a fishing boat to rescue him from his bedroom window.
A few hours before this happened, the mayor of Lyngen and the mayor of the neighboring area Kåfjord had been in a meeting with the energy department regarding getting more landslide/rockslide protection set up, and more monitoring of the known unstable masses in the area. Their request had been denied. The Lyngen mayor drove past the area on his way home only a couple hours before the landslide took the road.
