I once saw the first Bridget Jones' diary movie. It was very cringeworthy and stupid.
Last winter, I saw a TV ad for the second movie. The ad gave the distinct impression of even more cringeworthiness, and implied hooking up with asshat that was dismissed in first movie.

So when I saw the book that second movie originated from at the library, I borrowed it, thinking I'd at least find out what fucked up reasoning they'd use to bring asshat back, and also thinking it's easier to skip pages than it is to skip books.

Asshat is barely mentioned in the book, and is dismissed when he is. Things that were in the first movie are baked into the book. Nothing that was in the ad I'd seen was in the book. There seemed to be less Jane Austen obsession in it even while sneaking in a homage to Persuasion and of course talking a bit about Mr. Darcy. There was only one segment of a few pages that I skipped due to being too unbelievably stupid.

I borrowed the first book some time later. I liked it better than the movie, and it didn't have anywhere near the amount of stupid gags of the type I hate that were in the movie.

I have just seen a second TV ad for the second movie. Another collection of embarrassingly stupid scenes that weren't in the book at all.

Verdict:
The books are okay. Largest annoyance is book 2 having written out GAAAH! whenever something startles Bridget.
The movies are not okay. Largest annoyance is that they exist (and yet, I suspect I will see the second one if it's on a TV near me sometime, in a manner similar to when I saw Plan 9 From Outer Space)
