Me: and it's not just the ring, it's the whole Wedding thing
Him: right
Him: it's like people have set up road blocks at the stopping points of life
Him: demanding you pay the toll
Him: when you can just go around if you want to
Him: if more people did it, the alternative trail wouldn't be so bumpy, but because so many people did it, they're shamed at their own stupidity for paying the toll, and lash out at the people who "cheated"

Well, traditionally, most of the wedding is paid for by the bride's parents with most of the rest paid for by the groom's parents. But sometimes the couple wants more of a marriage than the parents are willing to pay for. FWIW, my parents got married in the woods by a judge. ;)
