Illustration of wacky northern astronomy

The sky is clear for the first time in the 2 weeks since the sun came back, and it was rising as I went to work (pink mountains) :)

Now, the moon is 5 or 6 days old. So it's a crescent, almost quarter, and at normal latitudes you'd expect it to rise about 5 hours later than the sun.

Right?

Not here. As I was admiring the pink mountains from the bus, I noticed an almost quarter moon hanging around in the northeast, quite a bit above the horizon; it's been up for quite a while already, maybe even all night.

Today I wish my workplace had windows.
